Cable Bay Trail in Nanaimo BC

As I had been to Nanaimo to visit friends we thought we would go north abit and check this hike out. Was a terrific hike down and back up! The trail leads to Todd narrows as well where very large seals were entertaining us! Great views here as well. The whole roundtrip was probably around 5kms. Totally worth it!!!

The trail up to just before the falls is very well defined and by my standard moderately safe and requires moderate exercise. To see the falls you need to go down the first decline and best to hold onto the rope, this is now out of the moderate safe and if you trip it is going to hurt a lot. To get to We did the Cable Bay Trail to Joan Point Park and it took about an hour one way. It is mostly downhill until you get to Joan Point Park and then it is a lovely winding trail to the narrows. Bring some water and toilet paper! We had a little snack before heading back to the trail head. Of course, the way back is uphill and thirsty work. We went on from there to lunch at The Crow and Gate Pub in Cedar, a nice reward.

We walked this trail in mid Oct. Lots of parking. It was a beautiful relatively easy trail. It was a good hike. We walked to Dodd’s Narrows where there were large rocks at the waters edge to sit, have a snack and watch the activity. The salmon and sea lions were very active and plentiful. It was very entertaining to watch. We also saw three boats going through the narrows. We spent several hours watching the sea lions. We had a most enjoyable day with family.
